Understanding Blood & Why It Matters

Blood is one of the most important components of the human body. It continuously circulates through the body, carrying oxygen and nutrients to tissues, removing waste products, and helping protect the body from infections and disease.

When a patient loses blood due to an accident, surgery, illness, childbirth, or another medical emergency, timely access to safe blood and blood components can be critical.

What Does Blood Do?

Blood performs several essential functions:

  • Carries Oxygen: Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body.

  • Provides Nutrients: Blood carries essential nutrients and other substances to cells.

  • Removes Waste: It transports waste products to organs such as the lungs, kidneys and liver for removal.

  • Protects Against Infection: White blood cells help the body fight infections and disease.

  • Controls Bleeding: Platelets and clotting proteins help stop bleeding and support the healing process.

  • Regulates the Body: Blood helps maintain body temperature, fluid balance and other important functions.

Main Components of Blood

Blood consists of four major components:

🔴 Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells contain haemoglobin and are primarily responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. They also help transport carbon dioxide back to the lungs.

⚪ White Blood Cells

White blood cells are an important part of the immune system. They help the body defend itself against infections and other harmful organisms.

🟡 Plasma

Plasma is the liquid portion of blood. It carries proteins, nutrients, hormones, electrolytes and other substances throughout the body.

🟠 Platelets

Platelets play an essential role in blood clotting. They help control bleeding by forming clots at sites of injury.

Blood Groups

Blood groups are determined by specific antigens present on the surface of red blood cells. The major blood group systems include:

  • A Positive (A+)

  • A Negative (A−)

  • B Positive (B+)

  • B Negative (B−)

  • AB Positive (AB+)

  • AB Negative (AB−)

  • O Positive (O+)

  • O Negative (O−)

Knowing your blood group is important during blood transfusion and other medical situations.

Why Are Blood Components Important?

Donated blood can be separated into different components, allowing individual components to be used according to a patient's medical needs.

Blood components commonly used in transfusion services include:

  • Whole Blood

  • Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC)

  • Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)

  • Random Donor Platelets (RDP)

  • Single Donor Platelets (SDP)

  • Cryoprecipitate

The appropriate blood component is selected according to the patient's clinical condition and the treating medical team's requirements.

Blood Donation Saves Lives

Blood cannot be manufactured artificially for routine transfusion. It depends on voluntary blood donors.

A healthy, eligible person who donates blood can make a valuable contribution to the community and help ensure that blood is available for patients when it is needed.
