Thalassemia
Every child deserves the chance to dream, learn, play and grow.
Children living with thalassemia have the same dreams and aspirations as every other child. They want to play with their friends, attend school, make friends and grow up to become something special.
But for a child with thalassemia major, life often revolves around frequent blood transfusions, hospital visits and medical care. While other children may be surrounded by books and toys, these children may spend much of their childhood surrounded by needles and hospital beds.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the body's ability to produce healthy hemoglobin. For children with thalassemia major, regular blood transfusions are essential for survival and maintaining a better quality of life.
The availability of safe, quality blood at regular intervals is therefore not just a medical requirement—it is a lifeline.
What is Thalassemia?
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body produces insufficient or abnormal hemoglobin, resulting in anemia.
It is broadly classified into:
Thalassemia Minor
People with thalassemia minor usually have mild anemia and may have few or no noticeable symptoms. They generally lead normal lives, but they can pass the condition to their children.
Thalassemia Major
Thalassemia major is a severe form of the disorder. Symptoms usually appear during early childhood and may include severe anemia, paleness, weakness and enlargement of the spleen or liver.
Children with thalassemia major generally require regular blood transfusions throughout their lives.
