Types of Blood Donation

At Parakh Voluntary Blood Centre, Jhansi, every blood donation is a valuable contribution toward saving lives. Depending on the donor's eligibility and the requirements of the blood centre, donation may be performed as Whole Blood Donation or through Apheresis Donation.

1. Whole Blood Donation

Whole Blood Donation is the most common type of blood donation. During the procedure, a standard quantity of blood is collected from an eligible donor into a sterile blood collection bag.

Whole blood contains:

  • Red Blood Cells

  • Plasma

  • Platelets

After collection, whole blood may be used in specific clinical situations or processed into individual blood components such as PRBC, FFP and Platelets.

This component separation allows a single donation to potentially support more than one patient, depending on clinical requirements.

Whole blood donation is a simple and well-established procedure performed after appropriate donor screening and according to applicable blood donation guidelines.

2. Apheresis Donation

Apheresis is a specialized blood donation procedure in which an automated blood cell separator collects a specific blood component from the donor while returning the remaining blood components to the donor.

Unlike whole blood donation, where blood components are collected together, apheresis allows the Blood Centre to collect a specific component in a higher quantity.

The procedure is performed using a sterile, single-use disposable apheresis kit and a specialized apheresis machine under trained medical supervision.

How Does Apheresis Work?

  1. Donor Screening
    The donor undergoes eligibility assessment and medical screening.

  2. Blood Collection
    Blood is drawn from the donor through the apheresis machine.

  3. Component Separation
    The machine separates the blood into its individual components.

  4. Required Component Collection
    The selected component, such as platelets or plasma, is collected.

  5. Return of Remaining Components
    The remaining blood components are returned to the donor.

  6. Completion & Observation
    The procedure is completed under appropriate medical supervision.

Types of Apheresis Donation

🩸 Single Donor Platelet (SDP) Donation

Single Donor Platelet (SDP) donation, also known as plateletpheresis, is a specialized form of apheresis in which platelets are collected from a single donor while the remaining blood components are returned to the donor.

An SDP donation can provide a high platelet dose from a single donor and may be particularly useful for patients who require platelet transfusion support.

SDP may be clinically indicated in situations including:

  • Severe thrombocytopenia

  • Dengue and other conditions associated with low platelet counts

  • Patients undergoing chemotherapy

  • Haematological disorders

  • Major bleeding and other clinically indicated situations

The need for platelet transfusion and the appropriate type of platelet product are determined by the treating medical team based on the patient's clinical condition.

🟡 Plasma Donation (Plasmapheresis)

Plasmapheresis is an apheresis procedure in which plasma is collected from the donor while cellular blood components, including red blood cells, are returned to the donor.

Plasma contains important proteins and coagulation factors and may be used for transfusion and for the preparation of plasma-derived blood products, subject to applicable regulations and clinical requirements.

Plasma donation is performed using specialized apheresis equipment under appropriate donor screening and medical supervision.
