One Donation Can Help Multiple Patients

A single whole-blood donation can be separated into different blood components, allowing the donation to potentially benefit more than one patient.

This is possible because blood contains several components, and patients often require only a specific component rather than whole blood.

Through component separation, precious donated blood can be utilized more effectively according to the clinical requirements of individual patients.

Blood Components

Whole blood consists of:

  • Red Blood Cells
  • Plasma
  • Platelets
  • White blood cells and other blood constituents

Modern transfusion medicine therefore emphasizes the appropriate preparation and use of individual blood components whenever clinically indicated.


Red Blood Cells (RBCs)

Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body.

RBC transfusions are commonly required by patients with significant blood loss or anemia, including patients undergoing:

  • Major surgery
  • Trauma treatment
  • Cancer treatment
  • Treatment of severe anemia
  • Certain chronic medical conditions

Red cell transfusion helps restore the body's oxygen-carrying capacity when clinically required.


Plasma

Plasma is the liquid portion of blood and contains important:

  • Clotting factors
  • Proteins
  • Albumin
  • Electrolytes
  • Other essential substances

Plasma may be required for patients with certain coagulation factor deficiencies or significant bleeding associated with coagulation disorders, when clinically indicated.


Platelets

Platelets play an essential role in blood clotting and help control bleeding.

Platelet transfusions may be required in patients with:

  • Severe thrombocytopenia
  • Certain blood cancers
  • Patients receiving chemotherapy
  • Bone marrow disorders
  • Significant bleeding associated with low platelet counts
  • Selected surgical and medical conditions

Because platelets have a relatively short storage life, maintaining an adequate platelet supply requires continuous voluntary blood donation and careful inventory management.


Blood Has a Limited Shelf Life

Blood and its components cannot be stored indefinitely. Each component has specific storage requirements and an approved shelf life.

Typical maximum storage periods under appropriate conditions include:
